See Pricing and How To Join Our CSA.

Your CSA produce is packed with eleven different items in a ten gallon plastic tote box to keep everything fresh and crisp. You return the empty tote from the last delivery to your next one. Your box is packed with seasonal fruits and vegetables that are selected each week by Joe, our farmer. If you pick up at a farmers’ market you may trade one or two items of equal value at our stand. The larger groups will be provided an exchange box where one or two items from you box can be exchanged.

The number of people a box will feed depends on the quantity of fresh foods consumed by the household. Most families of 4 find a weekly box to be sufficient and 2 people find the bi-weekly suits their needs. However, these are just guidelines and it all depends on the amount of fresh produce consumed by your family.

A list of the box contents will be emailed to you every Tuesday or Wednesday. If there are any items you are not familiar with you can research them on our website under ‘Product Profile’ then look up some recipes to get you started. JoanE is also available anytime for support.

CSA Box Contents

Please note that our boxes are sold by quantity, not weight. The regular size box contains 11 different items, the small size has 7 items.

The two full heads of lettuce count as one item in the regular size box. The small box will contain a bag of spring mix or one head of lettuce.

Our greens are in bunches similar in size to the ones sold at grocery stores. Carrots, beets, leeks and turnips are picked young for flavor and tenderness so these roots are baby size. Radishes are regular size.

Single items such as summer squash, apples, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc., are from 1-3 lbs. depending on the season. Melons weigh from 4-10 lbs.

Strawberries are one basket.

Please read about Strawberries under the ‘Product Profile’ heading to learn how to wash and store for maximum shelf life.

How To Join Our CSA

(Read More About CSA)
(See Complete List Of Pick-Up Locations).
(Find Out How To Get Home Delivery. Host Your Own CSA Group.

How To Join:
Contact JoanE at jemarrero@jrorganicsfarm.com or at 714-235-3219. You will be sent a Pledge Form to fill out, sign and return to us via fax or postal mail. Once we process your payment, you will receive a sales receipt with delivery schedule and all necessary information. (See Pricing Page for cost).

Picking Up Your Box
Your CSA produce is packed in a plastic tote box to keep everything fresh and crisp. You return the empty tote from the last delivery to your next one.

Your box will be at the specified pick up location on the delivery dates and time shown on your receipt. Every location runs slightly different.

If you are picking up at one of our Farmers’ market stands, locate our stand by calling the contact number given on your receipt. Our farm representative will give your box to you. At this time you can exchange only one or two items in your box for other items of equal value at our stand. Our representative will record your box return.

For Grangettos, ask the front desk to direct you to the CSA pick-up location. A clerk will check the list for your name, give you a box and record your box return from the previous delivery.

If you belong to a private CSA group, then your host will determine pick up procedures. Usually, they leave the boxes in an accessible location. You check off your name on the list and if you did or did not return your empty box from the last delivery.

View the Box Contents over the last year.

Re-schedules:
When you sign up for our CSA, make note on your Pledge Form of any days during your quarter that you will not be available for pick-up. After this, you are allowed one additional re-schedule during the quarter. A weeks’ notice is required.

What Is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)?

CSA is a new idea in farming. It was developed in the U.S. in 1984 in response to food quality and the urbanization of agricultural land. By joining a CSA you have a voice on how your food is grown while helping to keep the family run farm a part of the American landscape.

CSA consists of a community of individuals who pledge support of a farm operation by pre-paying a quarterly fee in exchange for a box of fresh, locally grown, organic produce. The produce is delivered weekly or bi-weekly to a nearby pick-up location. (See ‘Pick-Up Points’ for the one nearest you).

How Does Our CSA Work?

You decide you want to be a member and enjoy farm fresh organic produce. See “How To Join”. Once your payment is received, we send a receipt with your delivery schedule and pick-up information.

The box of produce will be delivered weekly or bi-weekly for twelve weeks. The produce is packed in plastic tote boxes that are returned on your next scheduled pick-up day.

Is It More Expensive Than Buying at the Store?

Our produce is competitively priced with organic produce you might find elsewhere. All funds are put directly back into maintaining farm activities. CSA is not about cheap food, which is usually neither nourishing nor grown with care of the environment in mind. CSA is about each of us being responsible for our health and the health of our planet.

The Food Box

The contents of your box depends on the season and the elements. J.R. Organics assures you of eleven different items, all fresh, clean and plentiful. We work to give you a wide variety of seasonal, CCOF-certified organically grown vegetables, fruits and herbs. See Box Contents over the last year.

85-90% of the box contents are grown directly grown on our farm. Other than strawberries, melons and sapotes. the fruits are sub-contracted to other local, organic, family run farms.

If your household eats an above-average amount of vegetables; one box per week will feed one-two adults or one-two adults and one-two children. If your household eats an average amount of vegetables, then a box every other week will be suitable.

Host Incentive Program

There are some of you who would like to join our CSA but do not live or work in proximity to any of the assigned pick up locations. Our Host Incentive Program is a way to get your box delivered right to your home or location of choice. Additionally, the host gets a free membership. If your location is not on one of our regular routes, there will be a $2.50 delivery charge per box for each member. This program is for the county of San Diego only.

J.R. Organics will provide brochures and any other materials necessary. In addition, we have our website www.jrorganicsfarm.com containing pertinent information regarding the farm and the CSA. If you would like to host a demo party, that can be arranged. I will bring a sample box and give a short lecture so people can understand Community Supported Agriculture. The box can either be raffled or everyone can take home a sample from the box.

WHAT DOES A HOST DO?

  • Host signs up the minimum required number of members to be eligible to participate in the program. The minimum requirement is 10-25 depending on the exact location within the county.
  • Host will provide a cool, dry location where members can pick up their boxes. It is not necessary for the Host to be present for deliveries or pick-ups as long as the box location is accessible to the delivery driver and to the members.
  • Host determines time frame for pick-ups, usually 4-6 hours.
  • Host will store the empty boxes from the previous week and make available to the delivery driver on the next pick-up date. (Tote boxes stack neatly into one another for easy storage).
  • We will provide a checklist that the Host will make available for members to initial and record if they did or did not return their empty boxes.
  • The Host will relay any member communications to the farm representative.

How It Works:
We provide an information email and application that the host can use to send to prospective members. Initially, the host will collect the applications and payments. Once the minimum order requirement is met, the applications are sent to us and we will set up the account. Any new members after the initial start up date, will join directly through us and be pro-rated for the remainder of that cycle or start with the next cycle.

Typically, there is a 30-50% drop off rate after the first cycle. Serious hosts should remain active in recruiting new members at all times. If you do not have a broad contact base and find it difficult to get the first cycle started, this may not be for you. Please note that there must be the minimum requirement every week for your site to remain active.
